Nokia N72 Fashion Phone Announced

The Nokia N72 specifications are not at the cutting edge - there is no 3G or WiFi, 'only' a 2 megapixel camera, a 'low' resolution screen, and it runs the 'old' version of S60 (2nd Edition). However this phone has it's own significance and it should outsell any of the other Nseries devices announced thus far. Rafe looks in more detail at the recently announced Nokia N72.

The Nokia N72 is the thinnest (17.5mm) Nseries handset with a volume of 95cc is second only to the N73 (90cc) in size. It is a tri-band GSM phone (900/1800/1900 MHz) with 3.5 hours talk time and 260 hours standby time with GPRS and EDGE support for data transfers. Nokia E61 Almost ready

The Nokia E61 has been approved by the FCC bringing the first QWERTY keyboard equipped S60 device one step closer to the market. Inidcations are that it should be available by the end of the month, though operator availability may take longer. TDG Hyping the demise of Symbian

TDG Research in this report claim that Symbian will lose market share over the next four years so that 2010 it will be behind both Microsoft (29%) and Linux (25%) with just a 22% market share. While the future is not yet written this particular prediction seems to be a little unlikely. TDG's figures for current market share are also seem mistaken. Read on for more.

TDG are also claiming current market share as Symbian (51%), Microsoft (17%), and Linux (24%). We know Symbian shipped roughly 33 million phones last year, but if the market shares number really are what TDG claims we would like to know where the 15 million Linux smartphones or the 10 million Windows Mobile smartphones are hiding. Bill Gates recently said Microsoft powered smartphones sales amounted to roughly 3.5 million. Linux smartphone have not yet made any significant impact with (and this is being generous with the definition) around 1 million shipped last year. Let's start at the very outside. A quick word about the N90's packaging, which is something that is not normally mentioned. It?s gorgeous. The phone itself is on display in the blister pack, with all the features that Nokia are proud of highlighted on the rear of the box. There?s a twin opening feature, and it makes the first few moments of the ?user experience? very nice.

"For consumers, CoolZone is a new and easy way to get rich mobile content and information. Every time the consumer visits a store, which has CoolZone service, she or he can easily browse, preview and buy the latest content to his or her phone. When using the service for the first time, the consumer downloads a retailer branded application to the phone in the retail location based on instructions provided in the store. The service is always customized according to the retailer's or service provider's brand. In a way, it is a digital shelf in a physical store. The retailer can easily change both the design of the application and the content during special campaigns, and the consumers will automatically experience the new campaign the next time they use the service. But CoolZone is not just a tool to sell content and organize promotional campaigns. For the retailer, it is also an efficient tool for loyalty programs.

The Nokia Local Content Channel Solution, CoolZone is based on Bluetooth connection between a phone and a service point. The solution consists of client software for the phone (Symbian client for Series 60, Java for Nokia Series 40 and other manufacturers' phones), a small multiradio Nokia Service Point LCP10 installed in each service location and the Nokia Service Manager LCM10 for centrally managing the service points and the content. The solution enables the delivery of any content supported by the phones, including DRM protected content. While the service is currently Bluetooth based, WLAN will be one of expected additions in the near future, as more phones will offer WLAN capability.

The Nokia Local Content Channel Solution, CoolZone will be commercially available in the 1st quarter of 2006. Nokia will optionally also provide the solution to retailers based on a hosting model where Nokia takes care of everything from content management to technical set-up.

CoolZone will be demonstrated at the Nokia Mobility Conference 2005 in Palau de Congressos de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain, during November 2-3, 2005.

Sony Ericsson unveils UMTS P990 smartphone

London, October 10, 2005 – Sony Ericsson emphasised its continued commitment to Symbian OS today with the announcement of its next generation smartphone to the global development community. The P990 will be the first commercially available smartphone to adopt the enhanced Symbian OS version 9.1 and UIQ 3 software platform. This flagship UMTS smartphone is Wi-Fi enabled, has a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus and features a new hardware keyboard beneath the flip-down keypad. The phone will start shipping during Q1 of 2006.

The P990 is the next in a line of successful Sony Ericsson smartphones - the P800, P900 and P910 – and is based on the same proven concept and recognisable form factor. All have been popular with users, operators and software developers thanks to their powerful productivity features. Operator feedback and download statistics from the Sony Ericsson Application Shop have shown that consumers, both business and personal, are interested in using their smartphones to the fullest potential. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) can be as high as 4 to 5 times that of more traditional voice-centric mobiles.

To ensure a large proportion of applications are available on the new Symbian and UIQ software platform when the P990 goes on sale, Sony Ericsson has decided to announce the smartphone well in advance of availability so that developers have time to create and certify as many applications as possible.

As with its predecessors, the P990 is designed to be first and foremost a great mobile phone. It also offers all the benefits of UMTS including video calling, high-bandwidth multi-media downloads and the ability to browse the Internet with full HTML pages. These are viewed in landscape on the new Opera 8 browser. In addition, the P990 is prepared for all major push e-mail clients enabling full e-mail access with attachments, anywhere, anytime.

The P990 has multiple text input methods enabling it to support all users’ needs and preferences. Writing e-mails is made easier by the new hardware keyboard positioned beneath the flip-down keypad on the main body of the phone. Reading them is made simpler on the large 2.8 inch QVGA touch screen. Multi tasking – being able to browse the Internet, send and receive files at the same time as talking – is now possible due to the enhanced capabilities of the new software platform.

Memory has been extended in order to handle all multi-media downloads and e-mail attachments. Memory Stick PRO Duo up to 4GB will be available in the market at launch and the P990 now has up to 80 MB user free memory. A 64 MB Memory Stick PRO Duo is included in the box, preloaded with a VPN client and trial version of a virus scan package.

The combination of UMTS and WLAN features will also significantly improve the efficiency and flexibility of applications such as e-mail, browsing the Internet/Intranet and video telephony. WLAN, available in hot spots all over the world, acts as a complement to high speed 3G services, enabling widespread access to corporate network services.

Other new features include automatic time zone change to the Calendar diary and updated PC sync software with extended synchronization possibilities. Additionally the 2 Megapixel camera with autofocus, digital zoom, photo light plus the bright TFT screen and video recording provide a high quality imaging experience.

In a separate announcement today, Sony Ericsson Developer World and UIQ Technology outlined their plans to support UIQ 3 developers.

Developers can program in C++ or Java™ to create powerful professional and personal productivity tools for the P990. The smartphone is based on Java Platform 3 (JP-3). It supports four new Java Specification Requests (JSR’s) including Web Services (JSR-172) and is the twentieth phone from Sony Ericsson supporting Mobile Java™ 3D, demonstrating the company’s leadership in this new technology. Standard Java™ applications can be run with either the flip-down keypad open or closed.

The P990 will be commercially available in Q1 2006. The variants will be:

Nokia has been showing off a forthcoming Series 60 phone, the Nokia 3250, at the Trends Berlin event last night. The 3250 is a music phone (as a 3 series phone it is likely to be targeted as a budget version of the N91 - no WiFi and no hard disk). Features include a fully rotatable bottom section incorprating a 2.0 MP camera (similar to the N90 in design, but lower quality lens), with music buttons on one side and a standard (3230 like) keypad on the other. Initial indications of specifications are that the 3250 is a Series 60 Platform 3 / Symbian OS 9 device. Mobile phone operating-system maker Symbian has reacted to growing media and security industry concern about the threat of mobile phone viruses, stating categorically that users are in no danger of getting a virus on their handset.

And David Wood, executive vice president of research at Symbian, told silicon.com it's crazy to think a company such as his own isn't constantly reviewing all security threats and wouldn't have reacted by now if such threats were real.

Cabir, which infects smartphones running Symbian Series 60 using Bluetooth short-range radio communication technology to spread, is flourishing in the packed stadium area. The version of Cabir spreading drains the power of the infected phones as it tries to propagate but is otherwise relatively harmless.

We heard rumours about it for some time. All About N-Gage has now heard from several sources at Nokia that a new phone which will belong to the recently unveiled Nseries will be putting in an appearance on the N-Gage stand at the E3 Games Expo in Los Angeles next week.

We don't have any details, but it's been implied that this will be a totally new addition to the N Series rather than one of the existing models. The new model is possibly already close to the production stage as one source referred to using it as their personal phone. So there I was having had a call from a friend on her new mobile, which my 9500 obviously hadn't recognised, just displaying her number. After hanging up, I wondered "What's the easiest way of adding this (12 digit) number to her entry in Contacts?". The standard Series 80 'Log' brought up the one line summary of the call, so I tried pressing 'Enter' on it. Up pops the number in larger type, with a helpful command button offering to 'Add to Contacts'.

At this point, I thought 'It's going to offer me a new contact entry and I'll have to copy and paste the number into the right one...' But no, up pops my full list of contacts (with the option of a new card if I wanted it), and adding the new mobile number to my friend's entry took all of two key presses. Now, this may not seem like rocket science to you, but it shows that a lot of thought has been put into the operating system and interface, to aid people in real world....read the full story

N-Gage QD getting cheaper

Nokia have announced they are cutting the price of the N-Gage QD in the US. It will now retail in game stores for $99 (pre paid, same as pay as you go). The price of games has also been cut with prices now ranging from $15 to $25. That pricing point makes the unit much more attractive when compared to some of its competitors, and regardless of your gaming needs is a very good price for a smartphone. It is not yet clear whether the price cut will be followed elsewhere and thee move invites speculation about clearing stock in time for the next version of the N-Gage.

The death of the iPod - Definitely

OK, it's a fair cop, the title of this piece is a little sensationalist and I don't really expect Apple's iPod to curl up and die. Not for a year or two, anyway.
We've all known for a while that Symbian devices are pretty good platforms for playing back music. In theory, anyway, as Nokia has traditionally insisted (why, oh why?) on crippling most of its Series 60 smartphones to only output in mono. Who on earth wants to listen to their favourite music in mono? You might as well listen with only one ear... Hopefully, Nokia are starting to see the light, with their recent new Communicators, with the 7710 and even with the latest Series 60 devices all supporting stereo music output.

There I was, drinking with an interested friend, when I found myself enthusing about the joys of keeping all my favourite music on my smartphone. I plonked my Sendo X down on the table in front of him. "That smartphone has got my entire CD collection on it", I boasted." "It's always with me and I can use it to drive a Hi-Fi, a set of speakers or my car stereo system. All my music, all the time. Oh yes, and it's a phone and personal computer as well. And you can get one for next to nothing..."

101 Cool Smartphone Techniques, written by Dean Andrews, is aimed at Series 60 users. It aims to cover all the Series 60 phones from Nokia, Sendo, Siemens, Panasonic, and others. It seems to be targetted at the US market (cellphones are mentioned), but its content is equally applicable elsewhere. Aside from the promotional Dummies book that was available at the Symbian Expo, this is the first book aimed at users rather than developers. When you consider there are at least 15 million Series 60 devices out there, and increasing all the time, this is some what surprising. Of course this is a reflection of the fact that people are buying Series 60 devices as phones, not as digital assistants. Indeed many may be unaware of just how powerful their phone is.

You would think by all of the press that Symbian Viruses are getting lately that we'd be on the verge of an problem of catostrophic proportions. It seems every day a new "virus" is released, with countless users flocking to forums discussing just how dreadful this all is. This only helps to disperse the propaganda even further.

Here's my take - It's the anti virus companies stupid! I really think it is. Think back a couple years. Series 60 phones had Bluetooth and MMS capabilities, however, there weren't any viruses. Now, companies such as F-Secure come around and voila! We have almost a daily release of new viruses, conveniently cleared up by one of their companies programs. Hmmm... makes you think, doesn't it?

In any event, it would really take an idiot to catch a "virus" on their Symbian Smartphone, it really would. Who in their right mind installs applications on their phone without first knowing the author. I liken that to walking down an alley, finding a sandwhich sitting on the ground and eating it. Who the f@#k would do that? I also think that the fact that these "viruses" are now being distributed to look like cracked versions of popular programs is only helping us developers, so I have to applaud the creators.

In any event, if you are still scared crapless by the state of the Symbian Virus, why not just nip it in the bud right now, install Killer Mobile's BlackBaller program and reject any unknown mms messages? Yes, it's really that simple.

So the next version of Symbian OS (version 9) is here, and there have been mixed reactions ranging from it is a really really good thing, to it being a bad thing for Enterprise markets, and the greatest danger to the Developer Community since sliced bread. Let’s say that all of those viewpoints are equally wrong and right.

Here’s something that is definitely true. Symbian OS has lots of nice new things that Symbian are very excited about in a good way. A lot of the changes that I suspect they’ve been thinking about for some time are now in the Operating System. Let’s start with the version number. There’s been a certain amount of mystique in mobile circles to see a major version number (such as 8.x to 9.x) as a fundamental change in the Operating System, something that only happens every two to three years. And while there are some major changes in OS 9, Symbian are now going to settle down to constantly improving the OS and we should see minor and incremental releases only a few months apart. This makes sense when you consider how fast the phone models change and go out of date.

Note that I'm not denying that malicious software ('malware') exists - after all, writing a little program that does bad things is trivial on any computer platform under the sun - but the existence of a little malware here and there (mainly where people are trying to get 'warez' versions of commercial software) doesn't mean that we've all got to start panicking that Symbian OS is vulnerable to the sort of virus and worm attacks so familiar on the desktop. As the device stands, you have to manually initiate 'retrieve e-mail' and then go off and make a cup of tea while it all actually happens.
